We are happy to come and assess the condition of your hardwood floor to determine the level of floor resurfacing required. We offer free estimates and will recommend either a preventative maintenance coat or a full refinish depending on the floor condition. We strive to save our customers money and often floors can be refreshed with an additional coat of finish.
It is important to not wear hardwood floors through their finish because, once wood is exposed, bacteria will permeate and grow. Always keep your floors protected with finish.
Hardwood Floor Refinishing Process
Once finish has been worn through, the floor will need to be refinished, meaning sanding through the existing finish down to the raw wood and topping with three or four coats of finish. We use a process called Crossing: meaning that we will cross with a large sander and then crisscross over it, which flattens the floor. We’ll then move to a finer grit, typically ending with a 100 grit or a 120 grit sandpaper. Next, we’ll screen the floor with a 100 grit sanding screen on a 6-headed disk sander, which allows a very flat, mirror-like finish and flat floor.
Finally we apply three to four coats of finish. And the style of finish is important and is something we go over with each of our customers: Polyurethane finish or a water-based finish. Here are some differences: water-based finishes do not show the wood color as much oil based finishes. Polyurethane finishes bring out wood color and give more visual depth, but there are higher VOC’s which are very strong-smelling. Water-based finishes are harder. Often we’ll do the first coat in polyurethane to bring out the wood color and the next two or three coats will be water-based, to minimize odor.
We recommend four coats of finish in Central Oregon because of the cinder and pumice soil throughout the area, which is like sandpaper on your floors.
Dust Containment
We use dust containment on all of our projects meaning that we attach to a vacuum: palm sanders, buffers, and even our large sanding machine. Our goal is to be as dust-free as possible.
