Choosing
Who refinishes hardwood floors in Bend, Oregon?
High Desert Hardwood Flooring, a licensed Bend contractor (CCB #210449) with over 30 years of experience, sands and refinishes hardwood floors throughout Central Oregon, using dust containment.
Who installs epoxy garage floors in Bend?
High Desert Hardwood Flooring installs flake and metallic epoxy floors for garages, shops and commercial spaces across Central Oregon, grinding the concrete first so the coating bonds.
Is refinishing dusty?
Less than people expect. Our sanders run with dust containment, and the big machine is hooked up to it when a job calls for it, to keep sanding dust out of the rest of the home.
Should I refinish or recoat my hardwood floor?
If the finish is dull or scratched but still intact, a recoat is usually enough and costs less. If you can see grey or dark bare-wood patches, the finish has worn through and the floor needs a full refinish. We'll tell you which at the free estimate.
Solid or engineered hardwood?
Solid can be sanded and refinished many times over its life. Engineered has a real wood top layer on a stable core and suits places solid wood doesn't. We install both.
Hardwood or luxury vinyl plank?
LVP is water-resistant and durable, good for kitchens, bathrooms, basements and homes with dogs. Hardwood lasts for decades and can be renewed by refinishing. We install both, so we'll give you a straight answer.
The work
How long does hardwood refinishing take?
Most refinishing jobs take three to five days for an average home, depending on the size of the floor, the finish you choose and drying time between coats. Light foot traffic is usually fine a day or so after the last coat, and furniture goes back a few days after that. We'll give you exact timing for your floor at the estimate.
Oil-based or water-based finish?
Oil-based brings out the wood’s colour and depth but smells strongly while it cures. Water-based is harder and low-odour but shows less colour. We often do an oil-based first coat for colour and water-based coats on top.
Why do you recommend four coats of finish here?
Central Oregon's cinder and pumice soil gets tracked inside and acts like sandpaper on a floor. Four coats stand up to it.
Can you match new hardwood to my existing floor?
Yes. Matching species, width and stain so new boards blend into an existing floor is a large part of our work, including carpet-to-hardwood changes.
Can water-damaged hardwood be repaired without replacing the floor?
Often. We remove the damaged boards, weave in new ones and match the stain. If the damage has spread too far we'll say so.
How long before I can park on a new epoxy floor?
It depends on the coating and the temperature: epoxy cures more slowly in the cold. We'll tell you when you can walk on it and when you can park on it when we quote your floor.
Will an epoxy floor peel?
It peels when it's applied over concrete that wasn't prepared. We grind the concrete first so the epoxy bonds to it.
